Of course, as our photo gallery at the party showed, our Components Company family had a great time during the holiday season. But we haven’t yet told you about our ugly Christmas sweater contest.
What Is An Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest?
You might be surprised to know that the ugly Christmas sweater phenomenon started in the United Kingdom in the 1980s; although, they call them jumpers and not sweaters. But the fad quickly spread to other countries such as Ireland and the United States.
By the 1990s, ugly Christmas sweaters were considered gag gifts. That continued into the 2000s where pop culture started picking up on the fad. One instance was a focus in 2001’s “Bridget Jones’ Diary.”
By the 2010s, ugly Christmas sweater contests really took off and, in 2011, Amazon reported an astounding increase of 600% sales of ugly Christmas sweaters.
Today, ugly Christmas sweaters and contests are just a fun part of the holiday season. And at Components Company, we have made it part of our own holiday tradition.
