It’s been awhile since we have checked on the status of the solar panels on the rooftop of our Brookfield, Wis., facility. So we thought we would update you on where our energy savings stand over the past year.
Some Background on Our Solar Panels
Solar panels have long been used as an alternative source of electricity. Each panel is made up of small cells that are able to convert sunlight into electricity. Each of these cells is comprised of two pieces of semi-conducting material, such as silicon. Together, the cells form a panel that is able to take particles of sunlight and separate electrons from the atoms to create a flow of electricity.
The installation of Components Company’s rooftop solar panel installation was completed in October of 2015. The solar panels have a projected 50 percent energy cost savings and it’s estimated that the panels will have paid for themselves by the fifth year of service; sometime in 2020 or 2021.
Components Company’s solar panel project has been featured with Energy on Wisconsin.
The Solar Panel Data
The graphic below comes from Deck Monitoring, the service Components Company uses to supply data regarding the energy saved from its solar panel installation. There is much more information and infographics on their site about our solar panels; but we wanted to focus our attention on this graphic.
The graphic shows that Components Company has generated 1,454 kWh (kilowatt hour) of energy in the past year.
Since it’s hard to understand how much actual energy a kWh actual is, the graphic also offers some typical household examples as to how much energy has been generated. For example, the amount of energy generated by the solar panels last year was enough to power 606 100-watt light bulbs. That may not sound like a lot until you add in the qualifier – per day.
According to a National Geographic article, a 2010 census data report estimated that the average American household had 40 light bulbs. Components Company’s solar panels generated enough energy to power 606 bulbs; so that means there was enough energy generated to power the light bulbs of about 15 homes every day for the entire past year. That’s a lot of energy.
